Ecstatic Enthusiasm

Ecstatic Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is a great word. I think of someone so excited their attitude is infectious. Someone who sets to tone with a vigor and passion. Enthusiastic leaders lead by example and carry the weather with them.   Enthusiasm is something every great leader possesses and something everyone who calls themself a leader should.

The truth is enthusiasm is a deeply spiritual word. It is derived from two Greek word En and Theos.  It literally means "in God". Or more dynamically translated, possessed by God.   So to be truly enthusiastic, we must be possessed or inhabited by God. If we are, if we have the spirit of the living God in us we will lead, we will have amazing attitudes, we carry the weather with us and influence many!

Wow, I wanna be even more enthusiastic than ever.

Superheroes, microwaves and our innate need for something more (but our super inability to wait for it)

It is hugely evident there has been a giant dose of superhero injected into our media veins in the past few years.  There are more superheroes than ever and more superpowers than one could imagine.  They come in every shape, size, and color and from every planet or alter universe.  They wear cool costumes, they help those in need, they are self-sufficient, sustainable and morally sound.  There are also bad mutants, zombies and super-villains, but that is another story.

Growing up in the 70’s I was taught about heroes of the regular type; men and women who sacrificed on a personal level and made an impact on generations to come. They chose for the greater good of others rather than garner personal gain.  I learned about Abraham Lincoln, Columbus, George Washington Carver and Harriet Tubman.  I also knew about contemporary heroes like mean Joe Green, Dorothy Hamill and Roger Staubaugh but  I knew there were miles of difference separating the great emancipator and the great quarterback.  About this same time I was introduced to Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.  Wow, superheroes could trump them all; they were faster than a speeding  bullet, flew in invisible jets and were multimillionaire playboy philanthropist crime fighters…Superheroes were, by far, the best.

About this same time in history a new super phenomena was developing in the shadow of the superhero and its superpower was noticed by more than a few teen aged boys and sports fans. This hero of super power was not flashy, but powerful, maybe not faster than a speeding bullet, but could perform different tasks faster.  It came from an assembly line and from a box, not from a distant planet and out of the box…wait for it….this superhero was….the microwave oven.
Just like superheroes, this super appliance displaced normal kitchen heroes like the oven or the stove with its ability to heat things better, stronger and faster…  Cook refried beans in a pan in 15 minutes no way, you can microwave them in less than 2 minutes.  Wait for two hours for Mom to cook dinner, not any more, dinner was done it minutes not hours.

I know a good superhero story is a good escape, fictional and all in fun.  I’m not begrudging an evening at the movies or a weekend at Comic Con. I am merely musing at the human need for something more; we know there is greatness out there and in here too. We long for and even need heroes with powers beyond normal ability. Someone to believe in, someone to cheer for, someone with powers from beyond someone for which to aspire.  To find hero in the quick fix and short cut, may be our super-ability to miss the opportunity to become super ourselves.

I would love to be a rocket scientist, play for the Lakers and possess legendary lead guitar skills but I don’t have time to acquire them.  If I could, I may wish for them….or maybe I would wish for my own island..or to fly.  I just don’t want to work for any of them.  We are too smitten with the overnight success and miss the value of the work ethic.  For every lottery winner there are thousands of teachers and doctors making a difference in the world.  We live in the world of microwaved food, why wouldn’t we expect microwaved superheroes?  Does time make superheroes?  Not without effort, but with determination, time can make hero like Mother Theresa.
Lets face it, it is easier and maybe more fun to be an armchair quarterback or rule the offense from an X Box controller than work out, lift weights, study volumes of plays and be ultra disciplined.  In the microwave world, super heroes have powers that are cool but frivolous, jaw dropping but not completely world changing. Heroes are made from trial and error, through sacrifice and pain.
Get off the bench and into the game. Every hero works at becoming great; maybe not for the purpose of changing the world but maybe just for being the best they could be or on a mission from a higher power.

Do we settle for the microwave superhero because its expedient or because its quicker, maybe we just want fantasy?  I love to watch The Avengers with my son while eating microwaved popcorn, there is a time and a place for everything.  But after our 2 and a half diversion, it will be time to go in the back yard and throw the ball around.  There will be much more time in the back yard than in the bat cave, more time acquiring super powers from reading and studying than from being born on a different planet or getting bit by a radioactive spider, much more.
Are there superheroes that walk among us, yes, undoubtedly, but they look more like school teachers and servants than caped crusaders and animals.  They wear jeans or suits and not tights or wearable technology.  They get their superpower from God, hard work and determination; from studying and discipline.  Yes, true superheroes are made not born and greatness inspires greatness.

The Delegation Process

I was making mention of the process of delegation  and realized I probably needed to review the basics steps of delegation.  I thought I might be able to Google and clip a quick 5 steps of delegation and insert the link into the email i was writing.  When my search lead me to consternation, I decided maybe there wasnt as much of a delegation consensus as I thought.  Because of that I decided to review some materials I had recently prepared and cast my own thoughts into the murky world or delegational data.
PRE DELEGATION
Set the tone.  Take time to line things up and get it right.
1.  Identify project.  Gather details and know what the expected outcome is.
2.  Communicate need and expectations.  It is good to know these on the front side so there is little room for chance.
3.  Recruit the right people.  Even very good, person that does not have the skill set needed will come up short.  Even though people are NOT tools, the adage comes to mind, "the right tool for the right job".
4.  Train.  Is there specific things that need to be taught?  Info to be known?
5. Clear the path.  Dont hold back any info, resources or momentum.  Get ready to hand the project off and let someone else do the work, get the experience and gain the victory.

THE 5 M's OF DELEGATION
Not sure if i took this directly from someone or if it is common knowledge, either way it is a great look at the 5 steps of Delegation. I could go into detail here, but I think it is pretty self explanatory.  The process moves the person being delegated to from nothing to ownership.  There are no time tables because each project has it's own.  This is the science part of delegation but once you get into it becomes more of an art because there are people involved.  Dont overemphasize the task at the expense of the people doing it.  Relationship covers a multitude of shortcomings...
1.  Modeling (show them what you are doing)
2.  Mentoring (you do it and they watch)
3.  Monitoring (they do it and you watch)
4.  Motivating (they do it)
5.  Multiplying (you go on)

DELEGATIONAL DILEMMA (AKA PITFALLS)
1.  Micromanagement-a manager provides to much input, direction, and view of delegated work
2.  Not clarifying expectations
3.  Not managing the process or failing to communicate
4.  Not being accountable

Find your Monkey

I was walking up Gower street heading to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. I was with five pastor friends on a ministry replenish retreat. I was ready to walk in when i heard the guys trying to give directions to someone. I turned around and met a guy named Monkey.

Im not sure if Monkey was his given name but we didnt ask. It didnt matter. Monkey was dressed in jeans and lots of black. He had black fingernail polish and black makeup smeared under his eyes.

Since we were all pastors you wouldda thought one of us would have forced a religious conversation on him pretty quickly, we didnt. We gave him directions to Hollywood and Vine, his requested destination. We also invited him to breakfast...he accepted. Breakfast conversation was interesting and it reminded me that i need to have breakfast in different places and with different people more often.   We listened to his story about living on the streets, about his family, about his journey.  We engaged, listened and befriended,

Monkey told us he was walking to Hollywood and Vine to meet a transvestite. He had lived on the street off and on for sometime, was currently homeless, had four kids, at least one was also living on the street. He had recently been given a shot at section 8 a housing and was a a recent grad of a rehab program although he was currently high.

We treated Monkey like our friend; we neither  prodded nor patronized. in our conversion.  We all hoped we would turn a spiritual corner somewhere, we didnt.  Thats OK because things might not have turned out any different.  He left high and tranny bound but we got a chance to show him love with our time, with our kindness and with our love to each other.  nothing forced or fake, just 6 members of the human race enjoying a meal as our trajectories crossed near Hollywood and Vine.

We prayed for Monkey, not awkwardly but just like we would pray for each other mi still pry for him occasionally.  Two days later I spoke at Valley Bible Fellowship and shared the monkey story in the context of showing Christ-likeness to others by loving  each other.   Love is most powerful when it is used.  Random acts of love are powerful and contagious. i challenged the good people of VBF to find their Monkey.  I guess we all do.

Here is a video clip of me sharing the Monkey story... its about half way through.

Easter Reflect.....

Easter is the most significant and important holiday of the Christain faith. It is an anual reminder of the enemies loss and beatdown.  Without Easter everything else is vain.  Christmas is important too and should not to be undermined. Without Christmas there would be no Easter.  Christmas is birth. Easter is death and then life over death. Easter is resurrection, Christs triumph over death!

Easter is more than being born, it is being born into eternity. It is being born supernaturally. It is not being born a human but being born as a child of God. God almighty, creator of heaven and earth. He died that we can live.

Easter is literally life: life past, life now, life in the future and life for everyone forever to come!!

Hope your Easter was a party... Time to celebrate.  Not only did Christ win over death but life in Christ wins always.

Life in Christ wins!

Without him there is no life.

Happy Easter, He is risen.

I Love.....Love

I'm not talking about hearts and chocolate.  Not about cupids and arrows.  Not romance, not sex, not holding hands on the beach not a personal passion or unicorns or puppies. I love love. I think love is the most over-used and mis-understood word in the English language. The Greeks had a better understanding of it because they had four different words to describe what we use for one. There is even a sub-conscience communication we use to give and receive love called the 5 Love Languages.**
However, if we really open the word up, like an ancient treasure chest, we will find that the concept is a treasure much better than gold and jewels.
The concept of love is difficult to understand. To pinpoint the words origin also adds to the complication. The word has Old English, Proto-Germanic and Latin influences and was first used before the 12th century. Dictionary.com has 27 different meanings for the word and i know there are dozens more. Its used to describe everything from affection to sex. The concept is problematic at best.
I like to think of two concepts, not definitions, that draw out the true meaning and value of love.
 1.  It is an unconditional commitment rooted in the way God loves us.
God first modeled love for us by creating us, then sending His son to die for us.  That is the ultimate love, sacrificial love. The kind of love i want from God and the kind I hope to give to others.
 2. It is an action word.
Ive found that love, even unconditional love that sits on a shelf and does nothing is not really love. I think love counts the most when it is in use, in action, when it is given away. Love is an action word.
I believe love is at its best when it is modeled more than defined.  When it is with the unlovable and the neglected, the profane and the hurt. It brings light to the darkness and hope to the destitute. It prefers sacrifice over safety and life over death.
God is love.

** The 5 Love Languages is a book by Dr. Gary Smalley.  I will be teaching a seminar based on this info at Christian Family Center (2719 s Hampton rd Dallas tx 75224) March 4 at 7pm. If you would like info on how to attend email me. rawd@puregroup.org

A Narrative for the New Year

It seems like everyone makes new years resoultions. It also seems like they are seldom kept or if they are, we sure dont hear a lot about it in December. Hmmmmm.

Lets add another layer. Narritive in many ways, drives who we are. Recently there has been lots of talk about story and how life is lived in story but i like to think more about a living narritive. Stories come and go, can be dismissed, mytholigized or even demonized. A narritive guides story. It is a path or part of a bigger world view. A living narrative is set in motion yet open for the characters influence in a destiny yet to be written.

Back to new years resolutions. In the past i've endeavored to set and accomplish some new years goals. Sadly, i have limited my new year narritive the last few years to a do and dont list i call new years resolutions. More of a task list really. One i create in December keep in January and forget in February. In restrospect i feel like the brunt of Stewart Smaleys pithy coloqualism...."I am a human being not a human doing." http://youtu.be/OcdIQRCoc10

So this year i want to live in the narritive. One of passion, excitement, people, conflict and triumph. I wanna be in Gods narritive for mankind not only lose weight. I wanna go all the way. I want to live for Him, through Him and in Him. I want to do life with others living vibrantly in the narritive. I want to help other live beyond goals into life, beyond slavery into freedom, beyond mundane to awesomeness.

The narrative of the kingdom is not trivial, temporal or trite but it is life to the freakin fullest. I want to risk, grow, leap, excel, achieve and inspire those around me. I want to be part of His plan and part of the game.

Off the sidelines and into the headlines.

Drop mic, walk off stage........

Top 5 Reads of 2013

Top 5 Reads of 2013
Amazon book supplier
Charles "Tremendous" Jones said, "Tomorrow you will be the same person as you are today with the exception of the books you read and the people you meet."

2013 was a good year for reading for me. There are several still on my shelf that didn't make the 2013 cut but will be good early 2014s.

I have a theory about what makes the best book the best book... When the book we are reading fits the place in life we are. As i look at the books i read this year and know how much they impacted me and then to consider their topics i can kind of see what was going on in a macro sense. Kinda cool.

5. The Speed of Trust - Another win from the Covey franchise. This book make one point; simple, crystal  clear, deep and so profound..... Trust is a currency that helps relationships and organizations better and function quicker. This simple and under-stated thought is emphasized in a way that made me say, ahhhh, now i get it.
4. David and Goliath - Gladwell opens the book by telling the ubiquitous story.....like its never been told before; and it only gets better. The master story teller, the inturcolater of inturcolation unpacks the saga of underdogs in sports, politics and education.  If you like MG you will love this.
3. Delivering Happiness - Biographies are inspirational reads. Biographies about successful people and organizations are even better. Tony Hsieh's tale of personal growth and personally growing a billion dollar company are very inspiring. What makes it interesting is the unique way Hsieh thinks and leads his organization. Great take aways include his love and use of corporate culture, leading from his gut and his willingness to put it all on the line for his beliefs.
2. Leading on Empty - If i read this book last it probably would have been #1.  This book became a manual of sorts, i referenced it in coaching and leading pastoral retreats. The first 2/3 of this were pure gold as far as personal replenishment and restoration, it is some of the best stuff around. It reads as a personal journal from a recovering stress addict (a very intelligent, Godly, wise one).
1. Every Good Endeavor - the best of the best. I wanted to read a Keller book because i am slow to the Tim Keller party and because the content. The subject of work as worship, God in the workplace or chaplains in the marketplace is very exciting. Keller weaves a narrative of work as a central part of the human experience. He intertwines worship, theology, politics, self worth and culture in the package called work or as Keller would put it, Every Good Endeavor.

Honorable Mention
Replenish - great thoughts of personal renewal, refreshing and re thinking replenishment for pastors.
Love Works - great thoughts on love and culture from the CEO of Herschion.
Bold Leadership - great thoughts on chaplains and spiritual leaders in the workplace through the stories of the people making it happen.

Misc
Tribal Influence - Ron Viette let me read a pre release of his book, cant wait til everyone gets their hands on this.
Inferno - I needed a fiction read, Dan Brown, thriller, say no more.
China Study - diet, habit, health, one of the reasons I'm a wanna be vegan.

Time for Energy

I posted the following question on the usual social media outlets and the number of responses caused me to peel the onion a bit further.

"Wondering what is more valuable: time or energy?"

The reason I ask is I've been wrestling with this for a while. Six months ago I would have said time, hands down. However, I was doing some research recently and was challenged to monitor my energy bursts throughout the day to see if there are other things like circadian rhythms that I could ride like a wave. I figure anyone can swim the tide of time but if I can ride a wave of energy, I may be better off and go a little further.

TIME IS A CONSTANT
It is the great equalizer, everyone gets the same 24 hours that every human has ever gotten. The president of the United States and the Pharoes of Egypt were all constrained by the rising and setting of the sun.

Time will come and go but its how we use it that matters. Most theories on time management end up with priorities, delegation and management as end games to make the most of time.  I think time rythyms should be considered too. Ben Franklin is said to have said if we have all day to write a letter it will take all day.

DAILY RHYTHMS
I suffer from several debilitating diseases each day: in the morning its chronic fatigue syndrome and after dinner its narcolepsy. I find that caffeine is a helpful drug but it only goes so far. So, some of that is not true but the part about caffeine is.  I find that there are those times of the day that are just more productive.  I like to think of these cycles as waves, I call them E-waves or Energy Waves.  Here is how my energy waves come:  they are not exact because there are so many variables. I find I usually have 4-5 waves but if I miss one, it is gone forever.

  * First Wave - Early am
  * Second Wave - Mid morning,
  * Next Wave - Lunch. Sometimes my midday meal requires an energy wave and sometimes it is a rest before my early afternoon wave. It depends on the agenda and whom I dine with. I tend to save lunch time for people I really like.
  * Wave Early afternoon
  * Wave - Late afternoon
  * Last Wave is in the evening but if I'm really on it, sometimes there is another. For instance I may use my evening wave for my family but if i have a big project, I may be able to force another wave after I put my kids to bed.

ENERGY IS A MANAGEABLE VARIABLE
It is important to anticipate the wave and plan to catch it.  There are second chances to catch a wave, and once its gone its gone. But there is always tomorrow.

I find that if I plan my day by priorities but also by energy waves I'm not only way more productive but can track my hours and progress by them as well. The scary thing is I've become highly aware of the stewardship of my e waves; if i miss an opportunity to capitalize on one of them i get kinda bummed.

SHORTCUTS
Ok they are not really shortcuts but if I pretend they are they help me catch better E-Waves. Rest is where it begins. If I am rested, that first E-wave, one i reserve for reflection and spirituality is a food one. If I am groggy or sleep in, I lose. Replenishment is like sleep but it is more than sleep. It is having a full tank, it is being alert, it is having a stress free mind, it is having replenishing relationships, it is peace. Caffeine, yep, it helps, enough said.

VARIABLES
There are too many outliers to list, but these are the major detracting variables:
  * Not enough Rest
  * Poor diet
  * Stress
  * External stimulants, positive or negative (ie. yay, Disneyland tomorrow or, oh crap I have a meeting with that guy)
  * Attitude and personality and your general outlook on life
  * Time of year it really does effect things.
  * Number of kids hahah, but it really does.

Maximizing CHANGE

Yesterday i was working in my back yard. I knew there was rain coming so i worked feverishly to get things done while i could. The good old Texas adage came powerfully into play, "if you dont like the weather in Texas, wait 5 minutes, it will CHANGE." Within the next four hours it rained 3 times, became sunny twice (i even put sun screen on) and in general the weather was awesome but just kept CHANGIng.

Life CHANGEs!

Im convinced that those who navigate CHANGE best are those who get the most out of life. My departed grandfather always wanted to return to Italy, the land his father immigrated from. Since he was scared to fly and didnt like boats he either needed to CHANGE his mind about travel or wait for a long time for a long bridge..... He never made it to Italy.

Since CHANGE is ubiquitous and inevitable here are some thoughts to help us navigate it to our advantage.

1. Embrace CHANGE
Its gonna happen. Dont fight it. Consider it a type of force that is easier to steer than start or stop.

2. Live in the moment.
This is not a statement of hedonism but one that speaks of maximization. This is something completely different than living for the moment. Be there, own it and make it count.

3. Be open to others reacting to change.

Maybe you have change figured out, maybe this one was easy for you, regardless, someone else may need help in making change positive. Help them, maybe you will need the extra assistance next time.

4. Dont sweat the small CHANGEs. So you are on the bus and you have to change seats or learn how to work with a new driver, no sweat, you are still on the bus. On the bus doin well but bus changed or your seat assignment did

5. Bend dont break.
The fact the change it self is constant but that doesnt mean that the changes it brings are permanent.  Things could CHANGE back.

At the end of the day CHANGE will happen. You get to decide if it will be a positive experience or not.

Often when CHANGE happens we have to learn who to trust.

A man fell off a cliff, but managed to grab a tree limb on the way down. The following conversation ensued:
“Is anyone up there?”

“I am here. I am the Lord. Do you trust me?”

“Yes, Lord, I believe. I really trust, but I can’t hang on much longer.”

“That’s all right, if you really trust you have nothing to worry about. I will save you. Just let go of the branch.”

A moment of pause, then: “Is anyone else up there?”

Questions...

1. Is change inherently good or bad?

2. For you, is change hard or easy?

3. What are some things in your life that are currently changing?

4. What are some things God needs to change  in your life?

5.  What kind of help do you need to help you navigate through change more successfully?

Were Better Together

Were Better Together

This could apply to almost anything; marriage, friendship, peanut butter and jelly.  The reason i emphasize this here and now is because we just hosted two regional events in the DFW mid-cities with resounding success.  Here is more info.  www.PureYMR.com  We will also host two events for the Dallas area in Sept/Oct 2013.

Here is the link to our "How to Start a Network" manual.  http://bit.ly/WAWCuA

Grace

Grace

A precursory google indicated grace was: a restaurant in Fort Worth , a Christian concept as noted by several dictionary sites, a Christian ministry, a chemical company (Grace being the name of the founder), a popular name for a church and then comes the rest of the internet.  End of day it is a Christian term and a name.  I think Bono has it right, "It's a name for a girl, It's also a thought that, Changed the world"

Words lose their meaning and this is certainly the case here. Having grown up in a Christian home, i have know the official nomenclature for my tribe.  The reason i chose to understand this word a little better is because i feel i give less grace to others than i should. Like most profound words there is an ethereal, probably Divine understanding of the word as well as an intertwined attempt at incarnation..

The concept existed before the New Testament but the Greek word charis was a concept was borrowed from Hebrew (chanun) which was a more complicated and abstract word for beauty then Divinised later to be married with the practical where it currently remains.  The picture i get is a young, innocent teenage female with proper attire, indescribable beauty and impeccable character; kinda like the unattainability of a 12 year old future queen with the practicality of the girl next door.

So i lack this virtue and now that i understand it more will endeavor to possess, model and give it more.
My actions to people will be more beautiful
I will lavish more upon others
I will look away from judgement and justice
I will be nice, be patient, look for the good in others and smile a lot more

Bono, take it home...

She takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name
